Today we have a lovely little guest post, all about making our homes a little more practical. As Dizzy and I bought our first house last year, this is something which we are often considering. πŸ™‚ Especially as Dizzy likes to take up rather a lot of room with her gingernut biscuits! πŸ™‚

Do you want to make your home much more practical? Maybe you just want to do everything you can to make it more suited to the needs of you and your family. Either way, these tips will help you out.

Properly Plan the Layout

If you want your home to be functional then the very first thing that you need to do is plan the layout. This is the most important step because it will allow you to move freely from one room to another. If you feel as though you are always catching yourself on the chair arm when you walk past, or if you have to navigate around the coffee table just to get to the other side of the room then this won’t be doing you any favours. If you need some help with your property design then you can check out companies such as Scenario Architecture.

Utilise Dual- Purpose Rooms

One way for you to make your home more practical would be for you to have dual-purpose rooms. Some rooms in the home are perfect for this, for example, you can have your bathroom double-up as a laundry room or you can have your dining area in the kitchen. If you do this then you will soon find that it is easier than ever for you to use your space effectively and you can make it way more practical too.

Use your Empty Spaces

Empty spaces within the home should be converted into something way more inviting. Consider having a little office,Β playroom, an entertainment space or even a library. When you do, you will soon find that you are able to use your space much better and that you make your home look more inviting.Β

Consider the Future

You have to consider the future of your home when you are trying to make changes. If you think about the present alone then you may end up experiencing more issues in the future. If you have small children now, then it’s helpful to think about how your home is going to function when they are all grown up.

Find Storage

If you want to make the most out of your storage then you need to try and make sure that within your storage area, everything is nice and organised. This could mean that you buy some shoe storage racks or anything else similar. When you do this, you will soon find that your space is way more practical and that it isn’t used as a dumping ground for clutter.

There are many ways to try and make your home more practical, and we would love to hear yours too. πŸ™‚ xxx

  1. We’re definitely getting better at this. One day no more stuff to be moved around. Our dining room duals as my creative space. Which I love when out of bed!πŸ˜‚But we are still transitioning into emptynesters, with belongings coming/going/coming back/going again/being stored/delivered/collected/re-stored/sifted/packed/unpacked during this complex time we’re all experiencing. Stay safe Heather, Dizzy & friends. Any ginger bickies going? 😊 xxx

    1. There are always ginger bickies going. πŸ™‚ xx How is everything going now? We are still staying in most of the time, apart from when Dizzy wants to go on a little walk. πŸ™‚ xxx

      1. Hehehe. Always love a ginger bickie!😊πŸͺ Same here. I haven’t been away from our home for months. But not been up to it, so that helps, lol. Our Princess T🐩 is still getting out for walkies with my daughter, which is keeping her sane while back home during this weird time. Stay safe. Xxxx

  2. Great tips as always! I’ve been attempting a bit of a revamp here for a while, with decluttering and organising. I think it’s a never-ending task as I’m trying to pace but then only ever get small bits done at a time, so it’s never ‘done’. That said, I do still enjoy the process as I find decluttering very satisfying! I’ve recently bought some more storage boxes, but now I don’t know what to put in them and I’ve realised we don’t have storage space for the storage boxes πŸ˜‚ xx

    1. I do try to declutter, but I am terrible at getting rid of things. I am trying to be good and give more and more to charity shops though, as I have way to much stuff. Stuff I don’t even use! x And that did make me chuckle about not having storage for the storage boxes. That would be my trouble too! πŸ™‚ xxx

  3. Dizzy has the right ideas I know because I have a little two room apartment and there is just so much space for me and my stuff. Less is always better. On the rainy afternoon Dotty sends greetings and wishes you both a Happy Coming Weekend!

  4. My stair basket is still the most useful thing I ever did. An ordinary basket is attached by a rope made of knoted nylon scarves from the banister at the top of the stairs and can be lowered to the bottom stair. This way I never have to carry awkward things up or down, but can lower them down or pull them up . This means I can concentrate 100% on walking up or down the stairs unencumbered.

  5. Heather – I’m going to bring you and Dizzy over here and enlist your aid in making my house look less cluttered. Many times I wonder how my parents and a pet lived here when I live here by myself and it always looks cluttered. Hmmmm. πŸ™‚

Let us know your thoughts, they always make for a very happy Dizzy :)
