It’s been super hot recently, and there’s even more hot weather on the way! This means it can be very hard to sleep at night, and Dizzy is one grumpy donkey when she does not get her sleep! So we’ve been on the search for ways of helping with this. 🙂
- Wear thin clothes and sleep with a little sheet (preferably cotton) – Wearing thin clothes will help your skin to keep cool.
2. Use a hot water bottle – Pop one in the freezer to create your own little bedtime ice pack. 🙂
3. Pop sheets in the fridge or freezer for a few minutes before bed – This will cool them down, and although won’t last all night, will help to get you off to sleep. 🙂 If you only have a little fridge you can do this with your pyjamas and pillow cases instead. 🙂
The donkeys popped themselves in the freezer… 🙂
4. Put ice packs on cooling points (ankles, wrists, neck) to help cool down quickly – You can do this just before going to bed to help reduce your temperature and help you drift off to sleep easier. 🙂
5. Magicool or water spray to use during the night – If, like me, you wake up super hot in the night you can use magicool or water spray to help cool you down. We find this one very good for helping us to get back to sleep. 🙂
6. Drink water throughout the day and a glass before you go to bed – This will help to keep you hydrated!
7. Have a cool bath or shower before bed – Doing this will help to cool you down before hopping into bed. Baths are also advised before bed as they help you two relax, so it’s helping you to relax and cool down! 🙂
8. Pop a bowl or bucket of cold water in front of a fan – If you like to have the fan on at night, popping a bowl or bucket of cold water directly in front of it will help to circulate cool air around the room.
9. Be a star and also keep your feet cool! – Sleep like a star so that your limbs aren’t touching and creating more heat. Me and Dizzy can’t sleep on our backs (as it makes us dizzy) so we’re looking more like squashed stars that have been run over… but it still works :). Also pop your feet out from underneath the covers, as keeping your feet cool will help to keep the rest of you cool. 🙂
10. Sleep under the stars! If you’re feeling extra adventurous you can sleep outside in a little tent (or underneath the stars)!
Dizzy and her donkey friends are planning to do this over the weekend. To prepare they’re having their afternoon naps in the garden this week. 🙂
We hope you’re all managing to sleep, and we’d love to know what your top tips for getting a good nights sleep in the heat are? 🙂 xxx
You can also read our previous post, on general tips for getting a good nights sleep here. 🙂 x
Long an adherent of the cool bath even before it all started. Always lived on a top floor with no AC. Also, I try to be still and focus my thoughts away from heat.
I find being still makes a big difference too. I haven’t tried focusing my thoughts away from the heat, but that does sound a really good idea. I’ll give that a try tonight. 🙂 xxx
great advice…………i always have to sleep with a fan on – even in the winter.
A fan does make such a difference. Hope you’re managing to sleep ok in the heat. 🙂 xxx
yes……..it does help, especially after a shower….
I love all your tips but sleeping under the stars is my favourite. I hope ato participate in the photo challenge soon. This week has been a social whirl. 😍
It’s lovely sleeping outside, so peaceful. And that’s ok, a social whirl sounds like a good way to spend the week. 🙂 Me and Dizzy are really looking forward to seeing your photos though! 🙂 xxx

Yes… under the stars! ✨ ⭐️
Great post as always! I like seeing them in the frig! They look super 😎 cool in there! This is actually a great idea that I didn’t think of before so I tried it tonight with my T-shirt and it feels amazing! Thank you!! 🤗
Hehe, they were having a great time in there! Just an effort getting them back out! 🙂 I’m glad the idea worked for you. I haven’t tried it with my t-shirt, so I might give that a go tonight. 🙂 xxx
I am using one of those little cooling scarves with the gel cystals in. They work so well
i have had to buy my husband one after i found him wearing my scarf on his head!
I’ve heard of them, but I’ve never actually tried one! Where did you get yours from? xxx
They are called meno cooling scarves from Amazon for less than £5.00. Designed for ladies with hot flushes, but work for any body in hot weather. Been wearing mine all day!
They do sound good! And that’s pretty cheap. 🙂 Thank you. xxx
A hot water bottle in the freezer, I’d never considered doing that. Hopefully it’s safe because that’s definitely on my list to try tomorrow – going to put it on my head to freeze away the migraines!
Great tips, Dizzy – lucky you and your friends can all fit in the freezer to cool down, but having ice water in front of the fan is also an excellent idea! 🙂

How did you get on with the hot water bottle and freezer idea? 🙂 I hope it does help with the migraines.
The donkeys are very lucky, I wish I could fit in the freezer! It’s getting way to hot again. xxx
Great advice!! The donkeys look adorable in the freezer, I wish I could join them.
Now I gotta go hide some PJs in the freezer (Hopefully noone notices them).
I so wish I could have fitted in the freezer too. The donkeys were all lovely and cool in there! 🙂 How did you get on with popping your PJs in the freezer? 🙂 xxx
Thanks for some great tips 😊
Thank you. 🙂 xxx
Where I live it can get quiete hot in summer so I sleep with the fan on, wear loose, cotton PJs and during the night dangle my legs out of the covers.
They all sound great ways of keeping cool. I do find dangling your legs out of the covers does make a big difference. 🙂 Hope you’re managing to keep cool. 🙂 xxx
We both have separate pillows”Trugel” pillows. These pillows are always cool on the bottom, so if you start getting warm you just turn the pillow over. Believe it or not, IT WORKS! Sometimes I awaken several times through the night, just flip my pillow over and go right back to sleep.
For the day time, I unfortunately stay inside in the air conditioning. Because if I get over heated I get gran mal seizures. Yeah, that makes my body move but not in a good way!
I have never heard of ‘Trugel’ pillows, they sound amazing! Where do you get them from? xxx
Jason gets them from Walmart. The local store that sells almost everything (and cheats their employees)!
We don’t have Walmart here, but I will have a look out for the pillows. They sound great! 🙂 xxx
Pillow is made by SINOMAX USA Inc. If that helps your search any. I really love the pillow!
Thank you. 🙂 xxx
Great tips! I find putting the fan in the window, pulling cool air into the room, seems to help. Soon enough Autumn will be upon us. 🙂
I haven’t tried that with the fan, thank you for the tip! Hope you have a wonderful weekend. 🙂 xxx
It has been painfully hot where I live and it does get challenging to sleep. But we do keep our house down right chilly and always have fans running in the bedroom! Please give Dizzy my love for her amazing advice and she also probably deserves a ginger cookie! I can not imagine Dizzy being cranky, but I guess it happens the best of us! I hope y’all have a relaxing and cool weekend!!
It does happen to the best of us, and especially in the heat! Dizzy does like her sleep, like me. 🙂 I’m glad you’re ale to keep your house cool in the hot weather.
I will make sure Dizzy has her ginger nut biscuits over the weekend. 🙂 Hope you have a lovely weekend and are feeling abit better. Sending donkey hugs. 🙂 xxx
I think most of us like our sleep and it does cause irritability when we do not get it. I would hate to see Dizzy upset! I hope your weekend will be a little cooler and you are able to enjoy it!
